Graeme Le Saux

Graeme was the first Channel Islander to play football for England. The former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers star won 36 caps for his country and played in the 1998 World Cup, appearing in every game as England reached the second round. Once the most expensive defender in English football, his honours include FA Premier League, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup winners medals. Both his sisters, Alison and Jeannette, have represented Jersey in the Island Games.

 
Elizabeth Cann

Elizabeth Cann

A quadruple Island Games gold medallist in 1995 and 1997, Elizabeth is a 3-time national badminton singles champion and competed for Jersey at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she narrowly failed to win a bronze medal, losing to Scotland’s Susan Hughes in a third place play-off. She is currently ranked in the world’s top 40.

 
Simon Militis

Simon Militis

Simon made his Island Games debut in Gibraltar in 1995, returning with a haul of ten medals, and captained the swimming team in the Jersey Games two years later. He went on to represent Great Britain at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and won a bronze medal for England in the 200m backstroke at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Both his brothers, Glen and Alexis, also swam for Jersey in the Island Games (Alexis is still the current IG record holder in the 100m free).

 
Colin Mallett

Colin Mallett

Colin won Jersey’s first (and only) Commonwealth Games gold medal when he triumphed in the men’s fullbore rifle in Auckland back in 1990. He then teamed up with his father, Cliff, to take bronze in the pairs competition. Colin also represented Jersey in the 1997 Island Games, taking gold in the fullbore pairs event with Andrew Le Cheminant.

 
Marianna Agathangelou

Marianna Agathangelou

Mariana is a 3-time badminton gold medallist from the 2005 Games in the Shetland Islands. Since then she has focused mainly on doubles, winning a host of titles. Currently ranked number 25 in the world in mixed doubles, Mariana and her partner Robin Middleton are also number one in the Badminton Europe circuit rankings.

 
Harry Vardon

Harry Vardon

Harry Vardon was a Jersey professional golfer and is one of the major figures in the history of the game. During his career, he won 62 tournaments, including the British Open a record six times. He also won the US Open and was twice a runner-up.

Vardon popularised the grip that bears his name, one still used by over 90 per cent of golfers worldwide. In 1974, he was chosen as one of the first inductees into the World Golf Hall of Fame and, more recently, was ranked as the 13th best golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine. His statue stands at the entrance to the Royal Jersey links course in Grouville, near to where he grew up.

 
Colin Campbell

Colin Campbell

Colin was Jersey’s first Olympian, having represented Great Britain on the track at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. He also represented Great Britain at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, where he was a member of the four-man bobsleigh team. A former president of the Jersey Spartan Athletics Club, Colin is currently coach to the recently-established Jersey bobsleigh team.

 
Tommy Horton MBE

Tommy Horton MBE

Winner of over 30 tournaments worldwide and a former PGA captain and two-time Ryder Cup player, Tommy is one of Jersey’s favourite sporting sons. The most prolific winner in the history of the European Seniors Tour, he has also been a great servant of Jersey senior and junior golf and for many years was the resident professional at Royal Jersey. Tommy is also a long time supporter of the Jersey Island Games Association. In 2000, he was made a Member of the British Empire for services to golf.

 

Jersey teams and sportspeople also compete at World and European level in sports such as motor racing, surfing, sailing, bowls, surf kayak, cricket, long distance swimming and rowing. We currently boast a number of rising stars who represent Great Britain, England and Scotland in rugby, netball, hockey, triathlon, athletics, archery, surfing and croquet.
