Jersey Island Games 1997

Jersey has always been an island which has encouraged sports both at home and abroad. Major sports such as football, netball and rugby have long histories. The Muratti Vase, an annual football competition, between Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney dates back to 1905 while the Siam Cup, which is played between Jersey and Guernsey, is one of the oldest rugby competitions in the world.

Until 1991, with the exception of Fort Regent, most of the sport facilities were under the administration of the Education Department, but responsibility was then transferred to the newly-formed Sport Leisure and Recreation Committee, bringing even more focus to developing good quality facilities for islanders.

The last 20 years has seen significant investment in Jersey’s sporting infrastructure to meet growing demand across a wide range of different sports. This has resulted in the construction of new facilities such as Les Quennevais Sports Centre and Playing Fields, Springfield Stadium, Les Creux Country Park and Bowls Centre, and the Oakfield and Langford Sports Centres.

In addition, many of the States-operated facilities have been refurbished and upgraded.

At the same time, numerous sports clubs and associations have developed their own facilities, including badminton’s New Gilson Hall and The Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre. Several of the football clubs have also achieved FA Charter status as a result of the improvements they have made while other modern facilities include Jersey Rugby Club’s new gym and clubhouse, the neighbouring Ten Pin Bowling Centre and Les Ormes Tennis and Golf Centre.
