Two International Island Games Association (IIGA) Executive Committee members are to visit Jersey this weekend for a presentation by Jersey’s Bid Committee on hosting the games in 2015.
Phil Austin, Chairman of Jersey’s Bid Committee, and his committee members have put together a programme of activities that they believe will highlight Jersey’s enthusiasm and ability to host a really successful Island Games.
Jorgen Pettersson and James Johnston will be shown Jersey’s sports facilities, infrastructure, accommodation, cultural activities and island life. They will also meet with government members, and visit the Governor at Government House.
The presentation includes tours of Fort Regent, Springfield, Quennevais Sports Centre and numerous sports club and association facilities, as well as the impressive selection of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants available on the island.
The IIGA executives’ role is to ‘verify’ Jersey’s bid document, which outlines the island’s facilities and ability to host the games. Gotland, a Swedish island, are also bidding for the Island Games in 2015 and both Jorgen and James have been through a similar process with their bid committee.
Phil Austin states: “Jersey has so much to offer. Not only do we have excellent sporting facilities, attractions and island amenities, we have the support and commitment of our Government, sports clubs and many islanders themselves. We are delighted to have the opportunity to show this to the IIGA and run through our plans for the 2015 games.
“Jersey last hosted the Island Games in 1997 and the support from the island was terrific. It is a fantastic event that brings islanders form all over the world together. Hosting and competing in the Island Games has markedly raised the standards of training and performance of sports in Jersey. We are excited about 2015 and believe we have put forward a strong proposal.”
