One of the great successes of the 1997 Island Games was the town criterium held on the closed streets of St Helier. A similar course was also the venue for the inaugural Rubis Jersey Town Criterium in 2009, one of a series of UK town-centre circuit races which attracted national TV coverage.
The event, which featured some of the UK’s top riders as well as a European contingent from the professional circuit, followed the successful staging of the prologue time trial for the prestigious Tour de Bretagne in 2007. This has since led to the Tour organizers announcing that Jersey will host a 2-day event in 2010, the first time an actual race will have been held outside of Brittany.
